Building a Legacy...

So, we survived the PTQ.  Congratulations to Grzegorz Flis for coming second and to Steve McAleer for making the top 8.  Congratulations also have to go to Jimmy Wild for finishing 9th and of course to Matteo Orsini Jones for winning and once again heading for the Pro Tour.    My performance was less than stellar, but for once the pool of cards I got was not as good as the pool of cards that I opened!  Feedback from the PTQ has been very positive and the whole thing felt more like a mini Grand Prix than a PTQ, especially as there was 2 GPTs and 3 draft pods firing off, with many others playing cube or casual games.

They say a week is a long time in politics - it would seem that a week is a long time in Magic as well.  Over the course of the last week we have had some major announcements with regards to FNM and Modern becoming a sanctioned format.  As a result my first major announcement today is with regards to the formats for FNM Relax.  From January we will be replacing the extended format with Modern.  This means that the last extended tournament will be 28th December 2012.

This will also effect the Pauper tournaments as these will cease to be Modern and will now include any common from Magic's history with the following banned list:
  • Cranial Plating.
  • Frantic Search.
This is to coincide with the MTGO Pauper Banned list.  Unlike MTGO there are cards like Hymn to Tourach which are available in common for these tournaments.  These cards will continue to be monitored and if found to be over powered they will be added to the banned list as and when required.

OP and being watched carefully...

The dates for the new formats will also be shown on the Patriot Website here.

But that's not all...  We also have some spoilers from Gatecrash which have appeared over the weekend including one of the new Planeswalkers;

Legacy gets to combo with Show and Tell, Omniscience, Enter the Infinite - draw my deck, play my deck  including Emrakul, start the next turn and kill you!  Love the artwork on the Hellkite Tyrant -  another optional win condition is always cool, not quite sure how you will pull it off though...

My third announcement on this chilly November Monday is that Patriot Games Sheffield will be running a series of competitive events every 3 months.  They will be one day events with  2 tournaments on each day - one will be Standard and the other will be Modern.  The first of these will be on Saturday 5th January 2013 and the Standard Tournament will begin at 10:30 so don't be late.  The top 4 from each tournament will get a guaranteed invite to the invitational in October 2013!  Full details will be published in next weeks blog.  Those of you with eagle eyes and a good memory may also have noticed that this date is the week before the SCG Invitational Qualifier in Doncaster.  Seems like a perfect place to test for the following weekend.

Will Thragtusk still be "The Man" in January?

My final announcement is to do with Legacy.  We will be having a Legacy tournament on Sunday 2nd December 2012.  In order to encourage people who have not played Legacy before we are making it unlimited proxies.  Jim Freeman is going to find some spicy Legacy prize support and full details will be in the blog on Friday.

For those of you that don't know it is Legacy this Friday in FNM Relax.  I have decided that I am going to crank out a Legacy classic in the form of Goblins!  Just a quick clue, this little fella may be turning up!

Nice...

Be sure to come back on Friday for further details of all the amazing Magic events coming up for Magic the Gathering.
